Sustaining Cultural Gems

Sustaining Cultural Gems

Empowering the custodians of our cultural inheritance

AGBU provides necessary financial and administrative support to major repositories of Armenian history and culture, alongside contemporary icons of living cultural expression, across varied genres and traditions. Our longstanding commitments have helped these national treasures prevail in both favorable and troubled times.

A 1700-Year Tradition

Since Armenia adopted Christianity in the 4th century AD, the values and traditions of the Armenian Apostolic Church are fused with the Armenian national identity.  Since its inception, AGBU has worked in partnership with the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin and its communities across the world to advance its work in humanitarian aid, religious and cultural education.

In recent years, AGBU has invested in the next generation of Armenian clergy with multiple scholarship opportunities. We also have funded the construction of the Vaskenian Theological Seminary. Our worldwide donors helped support local regional churches and, in Holy Etchmiadzin, made it possible for the renovation of the Holy Etchmiadzin Museum, Elderly Home, Administrative Building, Library, Old Veharan and Education Center, among others.

Supporting National Treasures

For Armenian institutions to thrive, they need sustained financial support and reliable partners. For many decades, AGBU has proudly stood behind some of the most esteemed cultural gems in a multitude of ways.

Matenadaran manuscript

Matenadaran

The world's largest repository of ancient Armenian manuscripts, this museum and research center received support from AGBU during the Soviet-era 1930s to establish the Matenadaran's library and in-house printing facility.  To keep the institution afloat after Armenia's independence, AGBU funded the maintenance and renovation of the building, as well as staff salaries. We continue to award scholarships, research grants, and publishing opportunities to ensure the viability of this national treasure.

Armenian National Philharmonic Orchestra

The rich historic talents of composers and virtuosos converge on the stage through the impressive Armenian National Philharmonic Orchestra (ANPO). AGBU has made a substantial investment in the Armenian National Philharmonic Orchestra since the early days of Armenia's independence, ensuring that the country's mastery of the European and Armenian classical genre would continue to dazzle audiences, uplift spirits and encourage the next generation of talents from Armenia to strive for excellence.

Gifted Artsakh

Artsakh Chamber Orchestra

Through wars and economic deprivation, the Artsakh Chamber Orchestra is regarded as a crown jewel for the people of Artsakh. Its stellar performances have earned it numerous touring opportunities in the region. Thirty years ago, AGBU helped launch the original Artsakh chamber ensemble, which evolved into a full-scale symphony orchestra that we continue to support.

Regional museums

Regional Museums and Institutions

In addition to large, well-known institutions, AGBU helps support smaller regional museums, libraries, and cultural centers throughout Armenia that not only inspire local communities but also promote tourism and economic development opportunities outside the capital city. Recent beneficiaries include the Kotayk Regional Library, the Sisian History Museum and the Gallery of Mariam and Eranuhi Aslamazyan Sisters in Gyumri.
